WFMW: Help!

quicksand_warningAbout this week: No exercise. Profound depression. No blogging. No writing. What did I do? I threw up all week long. When I wasn’t throwing up, I was retching and trying to keep from throwing up. And at one point I threw up so much and so violently that I blacked out.

This is par with my previous 2 pregnancies, where I had morning sickness all 9 months. And I can feel myself on the brink of that bad depression I had 2 years ago. I don’t consider pregnancy a pathological state in general — and I actually love love love feeling the baby kick and move. But the hormones seem to negate my antidepressant. Usually the depression reverses once the baby is born, but that’s nearly 6 months from now.

What I need: morning sickness remedies. At this point, I’ll try anything. So give me your tried-and-trues, your rumored fixes, your mom’s old standbyes. I already take Zofran every 4 hours (the meds they give to chemo patients) but this week it just ain’t working. Or maybe it IS working and I’d be hospitalized otherwise?

There was one bright spot — it was my birthday yesterday! (I threw up my birthday dinner.)

I’m desperate… can you tell me what worked for you?

The only thing that worked for me was lemonade. I’m not sure why, but it did help. (Just be sure to get it without pulp. I hope that last sentence doesn’t make it worse!) Also, try sucking on hard candy, like you would a cough drop. I’ve heard fennel seeds work, but I didn’t try them. I’m not really sure what you’d do with them exactly. Oh, those wrist bands for motion sickness–didn’t try them either, but I know women they’ve helped. If you have a scuba store near you, there is a new oil that you put on your wrist that helps with motion sickness. It’s supposed to be safe for pregnant women.

I did have Zofran one time during my pregnancy, but it worked pretty well for me. I’m sorry you’re feeling bad. I *hated* my pregnancy. (I love my daughter, but pregnancy sucked.)

I don’t know that this will make any difference if the Zofran isn’t cutting it, but I take Unisom for morning sickness, and it definitely helps. It, combined with vitamin B6, used to be marketed as a morning sickness remedy. Just recently the separate ingredients were approved by the FDA for treating nausea in pregnant women.

Best of luck, sweetie – been there, done that, threw up on the T-shirt.

OH….I’m so sorry! I had severe MS with my first child for 6 1/2 months. Could only gain 18 lbs the whole pregnancy. On my second miracle and had severe MS but this time for only 4 months. After 10 years of infertility, I’m half embarrassed to say that I REALLY don’t enjoy being pregnant. I love my son more than anything else on this earth and I’d do it all over again for the known outcome, but I REALLY don’t enjoy the process of growing a child. I know that sounds ungrateful, but there it is. :-P

I honestly can’t say I had any tried and true remedies, but I had an arsenal of things I’d attempt on a daily basis:

Zofran tops my list too, but had major, um…regularity issues. Fiber, fiber, fiber!
    Sweet tea and Pringles
    Lemonade and fries from Chik-fil-A
    Lemon drops, Lemonheads
    Peppermints, Peppermint Patties, Cinnamon Disks
    Lifesavers Wint-O-Green
Baked potatoes or any potato for that matter (my OB said it’s loaded with B vitamins which wards off MS.)
French fries (see above, no guilt, right?)
    Baked sweet potatoes
Fresh sliced apples or pineapple with salt
    Celery with peanut butter
    Steamed rice with chicken broth
Tried the bracelets, but they didn’t really work for me.

I hope something works for you!

Oh yeah. I tried the B6/Unisom mix too and it worked pretty well! But I felt SO OUT OF IT the next morning that I’d rather have dealt with the nausea. Seriously – Zombie Momma is not good in my line of work.

What works for me: coke with the fizz stirred out, toast, weak tea with milk. I did a giveaway a month ago and the comments were all helpful tips for fightin nausea. Here’s the link.

I’m with you – and still struggling, but my dr did Zofran & Phenergan (sp?) – taking both every 4 hrs really helps. When things get really bag I do have the option to take Reglan or 1/2 of one which has helped.

I hate to take so much med – but was given the option of taking them or being hospitalized and thought the meds were a better option.

    Hang in there sweetie!

I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way. Te only thing that worked for me was ginger. Ginger nuts, ginger tea, ginger cookies, it didn’t matter just the more ginger the better. I’ve heard a lot of people say peanut butter and crackers works too.

  8. mama2tlc says:

So sorry you are feeling this way. I struggled with morning sickness all nine months, but not to this extreme. What helped me was chewable papya extract pills, altoids pepermints, and ginger tea. Hope you feel better!

  9. Melissa says:

I remember reading about Unisom and B6 — I’ll check it out. I hate taking a bunch of meds but this is getting ridiculous… I’m game for anything at this point.

  10. Melissa says:

Yeah, I had forgotten about the regularity problems with Zofran. Urrrgh. The Lemonade and Fries from Chik-Fil-A sound incredibly good right now…. luckily there’s one near me! I’ll get some Lemonheads, too…

  11. Melissa says:

Did you take the combo at night? (I’m guessing so)

  12. sour stuff. I would not have lived without lemon drops, etc. I knew my boss was pregnant when she started bringing in sour stuff with her second pregnancy. (I had told her this tip previously.) Good luck and remember it gets better!

(Also, if you wait too long in between eating, it gets worse, which is hard to avoid when nothing sounds good. . .)

  13. Melissa says:

Thanks for the link Jendeis! I’ll check out the suggestions.

  14. Amy says:

With my first pregnancy, my morning sickness was relatively mild and Preggie Pop drops helped a good deal. This time around it was much worse, and the only thing that helped this time was peppermint tea. Celestial Seasonings makes one that is just pure peppermint leaves, and I would drink a cup anytime I felt the nausea coming on. It didnt cure it completely but did take the edge off. Good luck!

  15. Stacey says:

The only thing that worked for me was red grapes. Weird huh? But mad did they work.
Some other things I tried that ~sorta~ helped..but not much…everyone is different though.

    IN ORDER:

Preggie Pops..I think it was grape ones that I could tolerate. Switching to cinnamon toothpaste (because mint made we want to barf). Ginger tea..yuck, but it helped. Constantly nibbling on saltines. Lemon heads (or lemon drops), or whatever those little sour lemon candies are. But RED GRAPES where my life saver.

I heard that drinking lots of water. Doubling your normal 8-8oz. glass intake.

Oh my goodness! Im sorry but I have no wonderful tips. I too have heard about the ginger though. You can always give it a try. I know what I can do from here… Pray! I will be in prayer for you girlfriend tonight! I really hope that you can get somekind of relief soon. Hang in there~
